Matt Shakman (birthname: Matthew Shakman) is a director who has worked mainly in the television space, but has also worked on the big screen, debuting as director of the thriller, Cut Bank (2014), starring the colorful cast of Liam Hemsworth, Teresa Palmer, Billy Bob Thornton, Bruce Dern, Michael Stuhlbarg, Oliver Platt and John Malkovich, with Edward Zwick as one of the producers, and released in limited pattern by A24 after premiering at the Toronto Film Festival, grossing just under $289,000 on a $5 million budget.
Shakman returned to the director’s chair of a theatrical release eleven years later for his first superhero movie and a reboot of a reboot of a Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise, The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025), produced for Marvel Studios/Disney by Kevin Feige and co-starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Joseph Quinn, Julia Garner, Natasha Lyonne, Paul Walter Hauser and Ralph Ineson, and marking the launch of MCU’s “Phase Six.”
Matt Shakman was born and raised in Ventura, California, by his parents. Shakman attended The Thacher School in Ojai, California. Shakman attended and graduated with a double major in Art History and Theater from Yale University, where he was a member of Yale’s Skull and Bones society. Shakman has been married to Maggie Malone (studio development consultant, former Disney head of creative affairs) since 2012; the couple has one child.
