Joel Courtney has been a busy young actor since his debut as one of the lead roles in J.J. Abrams’ sci-fi movie, Super 8 (2011), starring Elle Fanning, Kyle Chandler, Noah Emmerich, and Ryan Lee, and returning a strong $260 million on a $50 million budget. Over the next seven years, Courtney starred or co-starred in a string of little-seen movies, mostly teen comedies or dramas, as well as a poorly received Mark Twain adaptation, Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn (2014). Courtney co-starred with Andi Matichak and Calum Worthy in writer-director John Murlowski’s sci-fi horror movie, Assimilate (2019), loosely based on Jack Finney’s 1954 novel, The Body Snatchers, and received a very limited theatrical release.
After co-starring in writer-director Vince Marcello’s critically lambasted but popular Netflix-released comedy franchise of three movies (The Kissing Booth in 2018, The Kissing Booth 2 in 2020, and The Kissing Booth 3 in 2021), Joel Courtney had a supporting role in his second studio release, writer-director David Prior’s commercially-failed supernatural drama, The Empty Man (2020), starring James Badge Dale, Marin Ireland, and Stephen Root. Courtney had a supporting role in the Miramax/Blumhouse-produced slasher movie, Sick (2022), with Gideon Adlon and Dylan Sprayberry, premiering at the Toronto Film Festival before streaming release on Peacock.
Courtney had his largest starring role to date in Jesus Revolution (2023), co-starring Kelsey Grammer, and released by Lionsgate. Courtney joined the cast of the Trish Sie-directed Players (2023), with Gina Rodriguez, Damon Wayans Jr., and Tom Ellis. Courtney was then cast with Frankie Muniz, Rachel True, Harland Williams, and Ramona Young in the comedy sequel, Half Baked 2 (date to be announced), followed by a co-starring role in writer-director Jeffrey Obrow’s thriller, Pursued (date to be announced), with Molly Ringwald and Sam Trammell.
Joel Courtney was born in Monterey, California, and raised by parents Dale and Carla Courtney. He has two brothers, Caleb and Josh, and one sister, Chantelle. His family moved to Moscow, Idaho after his father retired from the Navy, where his parents taught at the Classical Christian school, Logos School, where Courtney attended.
