J.C. Chandor (birthname: Jeffrey McDonald “J.C.” Chandor) is a director/writer/producer who made a strong first impression with his debut directorial and writing debut, Margin Call (2011), following fifteen years during which Chandor made commercials and documentaries.
Chador saw his first feature debut at the Sundance Film Festival starring Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Zachary Quinto (who also co-produced), Penn Badgley, Demi Moore and Stanley Tucci, gross over $19 million worldwide for distributors Lionsgate/Roadside Attractions/Myriad Pictures, and land prizes from the Independent Spirit Awards, the New York Film Critics Circle and National Board of Review before receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
Chandor directed/wrote the nearly wordless man-at-sea drama All Is Lost (2013), which starred Robert Redford (alone on screen from start to finish). The film premiered out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival. It grossed a modest $13.6 million before winning honors from the New York Film Critics Circle and the Golden Globes and an Oscar nomination for Sound.
Chandor’s third fascinating drama was his first as director/writer/producer, A Most Violent Year (2014), co-starring Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain, with David Oyelowo, Alessandro Nivola, and Albert Brooks, premiering at AFI Fest and released in limited U.S. pattern by A24 and in the U.K. by Icon Film Distribution and earning wide critical acclaim.
J.C. Chandor had to wait another ten years for his fourth theatrically released feature as director only, Marvel Entertainment/Columbia Pictures’s Kraven the Hunter (2024), starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson (in the title role), Ariana DeBose, Fred Hechinger, Alessandro Nivola, Christopher Abbott, and Russell Crowe, and released wide by Sony Releasing. Chandor again was director only on the crime-action movie, The Robber (date to be announced), co-written by Chase Palmer, Martin Prinz, and Neal Purvis.
J.C. Chandor was born in Morristown, New Jersey, and was raised in Bernards Township, New Jersey by parents Mary and Jeff Chandor (investment banker). Chandor attended and graduated from Ridge High School (in Bernards Township) and earned his B.A. when he graduated from The College Of Wooster, in Wooster, Ohio. Chandor also studied filmmaking at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Chandor has been married to attorney Mary Goodyear since 2004; the couple has two children. Chandor’s height is 6’ 2”.
