Gareth Edwards (birthname: Gareth James Edwards) began as a British special visual effects designer and indie filmmaker devoted to the monster genre with the sci-fi horror hit, Monsters (2010), for which Edwards was director/writer/cinematographer/visual effects designer/production designer, and starred Scoot McNairy, and which grossed $4.2 million box office against $500,000 costs for Vertigo Films after premiering to raves at the South by Southwest Film Festival.
Edwards made one of the biggest indie-to-studio leaps in genre movies as director of Warner Bros./Toho’s $160-million-budgeted Godzilla (2014), which grossed $529 million globally, featuring a cast including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Sally Hawkins, David Strathairn, and Bryan Cranston.
Edwards branched off from monster movies to try his hand with an even more expensive movie in the Star Wars universe as director of the prequel, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), written by Chris Weitz and Tony Gilroy and co-starring Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker, and grossing a strong $1.05 billion on a budget estimated between $200-280 million.
Edwards returned to his multitasking filmmaking practice as director/co-writer/producer/camera operator for the sci-fi action movie, The Creator (2023), starring John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Sturgill Simpson and Allison Janney, but failing to make a return for 20th Century Fox/Regency Enterprises ($104.3 million against $80 million costs).
Edwards returned to his roots in the monster movie genre for his first movie in the Jurassic Park franchise as director of the $180-budgeted sequel, Jurassic World: Rebirth (2025), written by David Koepp, produced by Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley for Universal Pictures/Amblin Entertainment/The Kennedy Marshall Company and starring Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, Jonathan Bailey and Rupert Friend.
Gareth Edwards was born and raised by his Wales-born parents in Nuneaton in central United Kingdom in Warwickshire County. Edwards attended Higham Lane School in Nuneaton and then North Warwickshire College of Technology and Art, where he earned a diploma in Audio Visual Studies. Edwards graduated in 1996 from the Surrey Institute of Art & Design University College with a degree in film and video and later received an honorary Master of Arts from the institution in 2012. Edwards’s height is 5’ 7½ ”.
