Fede Álvarez (birthname: Federico Álvarez) is a Uruguayan-born filmmaker who has mainly specialized in remakes of renowned horror movies, beginning with a string of short films including Los Pocillos (2001), El Ultimo Alevare (2003), El Cojonudo (2005), and his breakthrough with Panic Attack/Ataque de pánico (2009), which was discovered on YouTube and led to deals with Hollywood studios.
Álvarez was director/co-writer of the remake of the original 1981 Sam Raimi movie, Evil Dead (2013), with Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, and Lou Taylor Pucci, which premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival before a Sony Pictures Releasing release which yielded a $97 million gross (against $17 million costs).
Álvarez was director/co-writer/producer (with Sam Raimi) of the hit horror movie, Don’t Breathe (2016), with Jane Levy, Stephen Lang, and Dylan Minnette, premiering at the South by Southwest Film Festival and released to an exceptionally strong $158 million gross via distributors Screen Gems/Sony Pictures Releasing and Stage 6 Films (based on a $10 million budget).
Álvarez departed from the horror genre as director and co-writer (with Steven Knight and Jay Basu) of the Columbia Pictures/MGM/Regency/Scott Rudin Productions reboot of the Steig Larsson/David Lagercrantz Millennium series, The Girl in the Spider’s Web (2018), starring Claire Foy, Sverrir Gudnason, LaKeith Stanfield, and Stephen Merchant, earning a poor $35 million gross for Sony Pictures Releasing.
Fede Álvarez was writer/producer of Screen Gems/Sony Pictures Releasing’s mildly successful sequel, Don’t Breathe 2 (2021), starring Stephen Lang and Brendan Sexton III, and grossing a fair $53 million against $15 million expenses. Álvarez was producer and story writer of the ninth installment in the series, Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022), with Elsie Fisher, Sarah Yarkin, and Mark Burnham as Leatherface, returning a $29.2 million gross.

Fede Álvarez was born and raised in Montevideo, Uruguay by his parents, including his father Luciano. Álvarez has one brother, Nacho.
