Ali Fazal is a Hindi movie star who has broken through to co-starring in American and British productions. Although he early on established a major presence in Bollywood cinema in 2009, Fazal’s feature debut was in the American-made comedy-drama, The Other End of the Line (2007), with Jesse Metcalfe and Shriya Saran directed by James Dodson.
After eight years as a rising Bollywood star, Fazal landed a role in his first major Hollywood movie, Furious 7 (2015), directed by James Wan and starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jason Statham, Dwayne Johnson, Kurt Russell, Michelle Rodriguez, and Tyrese Gibson, and grossing $1.5 billion worldwide (marking it as the fourth-highest-grossing movie in history at the time of release.
Ali Fazal’s first starring role in an English-language production was director Stephen Frears’ Victoria & Abdul (2017), co-starring Judi Dench, with Eddie Izzard and Michael Gambon, premiering at the Venice Film Festival. Fazal’s next English-language movie role was the Agatha Christie adaptation, Death on the Nile (2022), under the direction of Kenneth Branagh and with Branagh, Tom Bateman, Annette Bening, and Letitia Wright. Fazal co-starred with Gerard Butler in the Iranian-themed drama, Kandahar (2023), directed by Ric Roman Waugh, with Navid Negahban and Travis Fimmel, and released by Open Road Films.
Ali Fazal was born in Delhi and raised in India’s Uttar Pradesh state in the city of Lucknow. His father, Mohammad Rafique, and his late mother (who died in 2020) divorced after Fazal’s birth, and for most of his childhood, Fazal was raised by his grandparents. Fazal attended International Indian School in Dammam; La Martiniere College in Lucknow; and the all-boys boarding school The Doon School in Dehradun, where he began to explore acting and theater. Fazal’s college education was at Mumbai-based St. Xavier’s College. Fazal has been married to actor Richa Chadha since 2022 after the COVID-19 pandemic delayed their planned wedding. Fazal’s height is 5’ 11”.
