This Thursday marked the start of the Sundance Film Festival, which will continue for eleven days through February 1st. This year’s Sundance will be the last one in Park City, Utah, with the festival having relocated permanently to Boulder, Colorado beginning in 2027. With a whiff of nostalgia, the last Park City Sundance is registering record breaking attendance. The New York Times profiled the start of this year’s festival by interviewing a variety of businesses in Park City, whose local economy has been supported by the famous festival since it first arrived in 1981.
Sundance has been a beacon for independent filmmakers for forty-five years, giving opportunities for filmmakers to showcase unique work in front of the industry’s leading distributors. Some recent examples of high-profile acquisitions announced at Sundance include TALK TO ME, TOGETHER, and TRAIN DREAMS. This year’s Sundance lineup includes the Charli xcx pop mockumentary THE MOMENT, the historical drama THE WEIGHT starring Ethan Hawke, and the comedy THE INVITE which was directed by Olivia Wilde, who also stars alongside Seth Rogan, Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton.
