Few members of the original cast of the hit Broadway musical Hamilton have enjoyed the kind of rapid career rise as has Anthony Ramos (birthname: Anthony Ramos Martinez). Ramos originated the roles of John Laurens and Philip Hamilton (Alexander Hamilton’s eldest son), earning raves and staying with the production for 15 months.
This quickly led to a co-starring role in Spike Lee’s 2017 Netflix-produced series version of his debut feature, She’s Gotta Have It (1986), and a wave of roles in prestigious indie films, such as Reinaldo Marcus Green’s Monsters and Men with John David Washington and Edward Burns’s Summer Days, Summer Nights (2018).
Anthony Ramos has alternated indie projects with high-profile commercial vehicles, including Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), the Liam Neeson thriller Honest Thief (2020); Bradley Cooper’s A Star is Born (2018), and Michael Bay’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023). In addition, Ramos had played the role of Sonny de la Vega in a 2012 touring production of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s first musical, In the Heights; he returned to the musical in the commercially failed but well-reviewed 2021 film version, now in the lead role of Usnavi under Miranda’s direction.
Anthony Ramos has amassed a significant roster of voice credits as well, including DreamWorks Animation’s The Bad Guys (2022), Trolls 2: World Tour (2020), and Disney’s Elena of Avalor (2019). In addition, his considerable singing chops can be heard in songs in several films and TV soundtracks since 2019, including She’s Gotta Have It, Trolls 2, Nisha Ganatra’s The High Note (2020), Disney’s streaming edition of Hamilton (2020), In the Heights and Space Jam: A New Legacy (2021).
Raised in Brooklyn’s Bushwick section, Anthony Ramos is Puerto Rican-American. He has a mother, a younger sister, and an older brother. A New Utrecht High School graduate, Ramos shifted his dreams of a baseball career to the musical theater.
He earned a complete American Musical and Dramatic Academy scholarship and graduated in 2011. Anthony Ramos had already done national tours within three years, a brief stint at Radio City Music Hall with The Rockettes. He was cast in the Public Theatre’s off-Broadway production of Hamilton. His height is 5’ 9”.
