Exhibition’s summer recovery is having its ups & downs — like this blah boxoffice weekend — but the good news is moviegoers came back.
Boxoffice momentum should pick up through early August before hitting some quieter frames and then a Marvel-driven Labor Day weekend (with no day & date Disney+ streaming). This fall’s movie pipeline looks stronger than usual, thanks mostly to strategic release changes studios made mid-pandemic. Here’s a quick look at 2 good upcoming weeks:
7/30: Disney’s PG-13 JUNGLE CRUISE (pictured) is tracking with an average first choice score of 2 points over the norm. Strongest demo: +25F with a double-digit score that’s twice the norm. Dwayne Johnson’s always hot & Emily Blunt’s hotter than ever just coming off the success of A QUIET PLACE 2. Wild card: Day & date Disney+ streaming. Also, 7/30: A24’s THE GREEN KNIGHT & Focus’s STILLWATER are both R dramas tracking below norms.
8/6: WB/DC/Atlas’s R rated THE SUICIDE SQUAD’s average first choice tracking is 3 points over the norm. Demo strength: -25M (6 points over norm) & +25M (5 points over norm). 2016 original did $746.8M globally. Wild card: Day & date HBO Max streaming.
