The 34th week of the year was another positive sign for the exhibition. While “Free Guy” continued its run in the first place, the industry overall performed at 57% of the same week in 2019. This brought the trailing four-week totals for 2021 up to 53% of the same period in 2019 and increased the Velocity of Recovery to 1.37 percentage points per week. This is the highest rate of recovery we’ve seen since we started reporting that number four weeks ago. If things continue at this pace, on December 17th the industry will reach the milestone of earning 75% of the grosses it achieved in 2019. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the month of September looks to be a tough comp to 2019 when “It Chapter Two”, “Hustlers” and “Downton Abbey” led the way by grossing collectively over $400M during their theatrical runs. Only the previously-mentioned “Shang-Chi” stands out among this year’s September slate.
