The United Theatre is a regional center for the arts and arts education located in Westerly, Rhode Island. It was originally built in 1926 as a vaudeville house and later became a movie theater. The theater closed in 1986 and remained dormant until the Westerly Land Trust bought it in 2006. The United Theatre has since been reincarnated through a $17 million investment to create a state-of-the-art facility consisting of three movie cinemas, one large black box balconied venue with a 500-person capacity, an art gallery/reception space, and a music school with seven acoustically isolated music classrooms that is run in conjunction with the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra and Music School.
The United Theatre’s mission is to unite the community through the arts by showcasing world-class performing, visual and creative arts. They believe in blurring the lines between artist and audience by immersing the community in the appreciation and contextualization of art in its many forms, including film, music, theater, opera, dance, visual arts, lectures and more.
