While it may not wind up to be the full-scale merger that was rumored earlier this year, the outlines of a strategic partnership between Lionsgate and STX are now taking shape.
Earlier this week, Deadline reported that STX’s Adam Fogelson would be moving over to Lionsgate as of September 1st to assume the role of Vice Chair in charge of theatrical distribution. Fogelson is an industry veteran whose tenure at STX has been marked by successful releases of original titles including BAD MOMS, HUSTLERS, THE GENTLEMAN, and THE UPSIDE.
From 2009-2013, Fogelson managed Universal’s theatrical release with successful launches of PITCH PERFECT, THE PURGE, and the DESPICABLE ME franchise debut. At Lionsgate, Fogelson will be responsible for distributing STX’s upcoming releases of Guy Ritchie’s OPERATION FORTUNE: RUSE DE GUERRE, Michael Mann’s FERRARI, and THE MARSH KING’S DAUGHTER starring Daisy Ridley.
Even though STX will remain independent from Lionsgate, these moves are creating a unique and close relationship between the two companies and increasing Lionsgate’s importance in the theatrical marketplace.
