Some good news emerged from ongoing contract negotiations between Hollywood’s IATSE union and AMPTP studio representatives. IATSE, which stands for the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, represents workers from trades and specialties that contribute to on-set production. Negotiations to extend the current contract began a few weeks ago, with many hoping to see an early agreement rather than risk another costly strike that would shut down the film industry.
Reports have emerged that the IATSE sub-groups representing Cinematographers and Art Directors reached a provisional deal with the studios. This comes well in advance of the future deadline for a strike, indicating that both sides are interested in heading off this potential calamity.
Any agreement struck by union negotiators must be approved by its members, and there are 11 other sub-groups under the umbrella of the IATSE. Therefore, there is still a long way to go before all matters are settled. However, the positive early reports may indicate an easier negotiation ahead than with last year’s tough talk between studios and the writers (WGA) and actors (SAG-AFTRA).
