Kevin Costner’s high profile “Horizon” film series suffered a significant setback this week when Warner Bros. opted to postpone the planned August 16 release of HORIZON: CHAPTER 2, “to give audiences a greater opportunity to discover the first installment of Horizon over the coming weeks, including on PVOD and Max.” The hope is that as the number of viewers for HORIZON: CHAPTER 1 grows, interest in seeing a second movie will also expand.
However, some are skeptical that CHAPTER 2 will ever see a theatrical release. CHAPTER 1 has struggled in its theatrical run which began on June 28, with the film grossing under $23 million globally at the time of Warner Bros.’ announcement.
It had a production budget of $100 million, of which Costner contributed $38 million from his resources. This announcement is an acknowledgment that the planned four-part epic series is struggling to find its audience, and calls into question the future of the series.
