AMC Theatres, the largest movie theatre operator in the world, announced that as of last Friday it had re-opened 98% of its 630 cinema locations in the U.S., including 52 of its 54 locations in California. A key milestone in the reboot of the exhibition came when L.A. County lifted its “Safer at Home” emergency orders earlier this month, allowing movie theatres to re-open with limited capacity after one year of forced closures. The largest U.S. exhibitors have taken different approaches to navigate the challenges presented by the pandemic. Regal, the second-largest exhibitor in the U.S., has kept its locations closed throughout the pandemic, waiting for the return of big-budget studio releases ramping up its operations. On the other hand, AMC has elected to open where allowed, with the strategy that having its theatres open would signal strength and encourage audiences to get back into the habit of going to the movies.
