Amidst a constantly evolving landscape in theatrical distribution, Angel Studios has been a notable success story over the past few years. Based in Provo, Utah, the company was founded in 2013 by Neal Harmon and his brothers Daniel, Jeffrey, and Jordan, along with their cousin Benton.
Initially, they focused on releasing “faith-friendly” content on their in-house streaming platform. However, in the post-COVID marketplace, Harmon saw an opportunity to bring their films to theatres, most successfully with their 2023 smash hit SOUND OF FREEDOM. The New York Times profiled Angel Studios and the unique business model they’ve established.
Angel Studios’ first release in theatres was HIS ONLY SON in 2023, which was created for a mere $250,000 and grossed nearly $14 million at the box office. From that hopeful beginning, the earth moved underneath them a few months later with their July 4th release of SOUND OF FREEDOM.
That film blew up over the summer moviegoing season, earning $250 million worldwide for a movie that cost only $14.5 million. FREEDOM raised Angel’s profile dramatically, especially with their unique “Pay It Forward Ticketing” model in which one customer buys a ticket for a future moviegoer also to see the film.
This approach is viable for Angel because of the passionate commitment its fans have to the mission of the studio to produce faith-based content. While it guarantees a baseline of ticket sales, some question whether these purchases should be counted towards the overall box office gross. Angel continues to benefit from this approach, including with this weekend’s release of KING OF KINGS.
Angel also uses their unique relationship with their fans to get feedback on ideas for upcoming film projects. On their streaming platform, Angel releases “concept reels” that present various film ideas and asks “guild members” to vote on whether to proceed with the project.
Members are also given the option to participate in financing the film, which helps fund the production expenses. Angel’s relationship with this small but dedicated faith-focused audience has allowed the studio to become a leader in new ways to make and distribute movies.
