Coming to theaters December 12, 2025, SCARLET (2025) is a dark fantasy revenge quest from Sony Pictures Entertainment and Studio Chizu, led by Academy Award–nominated filmmaker Mamoru Hosoda. The first look teases a pink-haired warrior princess in a blood-streaked white gown moving through the bleak “Land of the Dead,” setting a fierce, mythic tone for Hosoda’s return to the big screen.
SCARLET wakes after failing to avenge her father’s murder. In this world of fraying sanity, the rules are simple and merciless: take revenge on a sworn enemy or fade into nothing. The film promises an odyssey across time and space, an “endless” journey where every choice carries emotional weight.
The film is directed and written by Mamoru Hosoda (Mirai, Belle, Wolf Children, Summer Wars), whose work blends high emotion with big imagination. Here, he partners again with Studio Chizu, with Sony Pictures co-producing and handling worldwide distribution outside Japan while Toho releases domestically. Japan opens first on November 21, followed by the U.S. on December 12. Japanese voice leads include Mana Ashida and Masaki Okada.
If you’re a fan of bold, emotionally charged animation that carries real dramatic weight, SCARLET looks like one to watch. Releasing December 12, it’s the kind of film that’ll stick with you in ways you didn’t expect.
