Los Angeles and New York City are the number 1 and 2 box office markets in the U.S., and therefore are vital to the success of any movie release. Throughout 2020, studios delayed releasing most major titles because theatres in both cities had closed by order of local health authorities. Fast forward to spring 2021 and the success of the rollout of the vaccine across the U.S. has resulted in virtually all markets including LA and NYC reopening businesses, including cinemas. On Friday, California Health and Human Services Director Dr Mark Ghaly spoke with reporters about the Golden State’s plans to fully reopen all its businesses by June 15th. As of that date, there will no longer be any physical distancing requirements for any business, including cinemas. The state will continue to follow the CDC’s making guidelines for indoor activities, which are expected to evolve over time. By allowing theatres to resume operation at full capacity, a major impediment to the recovery of exhibitors will be eliminated, allowing a return to “normal times”, and profitability.
